Her father was a diplomat and the family moved frequently. They lived in a variety of countries across the globe including Germany, Japan, Greece and Germany. Harden was a student at Surrattsville High School, Clinton after which she settled in Maryland. In 1980, she enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a bachelor's degree in theater. Harden was accepted into NYU's Tisch School of the Arts 1988 to pursue her MFA.
