Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speaker. Feminist Frequency was created by Sarkeesian. The site hosts videos with commentary that analyze gender representations in the media and popular culture of today. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American journalist and critic who has won awards for her work, is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency is an educational site for non-profit organizations that examines female representations in the popular media narratives. She's committed to removing stereotypes of women as they are portrayed in popular media. Furthermore, she works to raise the awareness of harassment on social media targeted at women, and other marginalized groups of people. Holding a master's degree in social and political thought at York University Sarkeesian is also well-known as a sought-after speaker and she has delivered talks at the TEDxWomen XOXO festival and the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Feminist Frequency was founded on the 9th of September 2009 by Sarkeesian, an undergraduate student at York University who had been fascinated by issues concerning gender and feminism for quite a lengthy time. This ambitious woman planned to start an internet-based series on gender representation in games, however, she was also the subject of a harassment campaign online. The incident did not deter her, but instead strengthened the determination of an activist for women in media.
